It is difficult to overstate the significance of this fact: for the first time, it has become possible to leverage the historic, exponential acceleration of digital technology to make an independent psychological thriller with no compromise in quality—even in comparison to big budget studio films of the same genre.
It’s a dark, cerebral, existential psychological thriller—a genre that I’ve always loved. I drew on my philosophy, psychology, and literature backgrounds to meaningfully explore a myriad of subjects ranging from existentialism, post-trauma family dynamics, parental responsibility, responsibilities between generations, and even the meaning of life itself. This is all set in a rapid-paced psychological thriller that employs the Zeigarnik effect, which is a psychological effect that continually resets the viewer’s attention span by giving their minds new mysteries to ponder, drawing the audience in further—binge-watching results from the same phenomena. Consequently, Dangerous to Know is filled to the brim with intelligent philosophy, unexpected twists, and an unforgettable, epic conclusion.
Personally, I’m best known for my award-winning speculative sci-fi series, Post-Human and the research required to write a speculative look into our technological future required that I become an expert on information tech and AI. It was through that lens that I recognized a special moment reached in early 2016; this was the moment that affordable digital 4K film cameras and 4K full frame DSLRs made it possible for independent filmmakers to film with tools that even a talent as immense as David Fincher would’ve coveted, had the same tools existed in 2007 as he filmed Zodiac in digital HD, editing on that era’s iMacs and plasma flat screens. The consequence of this was that, while our film couldn’t be a sci-fi story, as costumes and intense VFX for a feature length film are still solely the domain of Hollywood budgets, it was now possible that an indie film set in the present, using practical locations, could be filmed with spectacular results. All we needed was a story worthy of the newly affordable tech...and our passion.
Dangerous to Know is that story.

The film’s director, David Simpson, said his wife and filmmaking partner, Jennifer, had tweeted to Flanagan in hopes of getting a retweet as part of their marketing. “We were just hoping to get our campaign mentioned in a tweet—we didn’t think he’d actually take the time to check us out and pledge to the campaign.”
